How to Replace timing chain on BMW E32 740i 1994-96

Special tools

  • Flywheel timing pin – BMW No.11 2 300.
  • Camshaft alignment tools – BMW Nos.11 2 441/442/443/444/445.
  • Timing chain pre-tensioning tool – BMW No.11 3 390.

Special precautions

  • Disconnect battery earth lead.
  • Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
  • Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
  • Observe tightening torques.
  • If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position (CKP) sensor before removal.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other sprockets.
  • Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with timing chain removed.

Valve timing procedures

  • Engine at TDC on No.1 cylinder.
  • Insert flywheel timing pin [1] . Tool No.11 2 300.
  • Ensure No.1 cylinder camshaft lobes are facing [2] .
  • Ensure arrows on camshaft sprockets face upwards [3] .
  • Install camshaft alignment tools [4] . Tool Nos.11 2 441/442/443/444/445.

  1. I realized that is not easy with my 320d e46 m47engeen 2004 model timing, I replaced top and camshaft without marking and looking where they point. But I believe from this page I will get it Wright.
